5 Reasons Why Your Skin Is Dull And Dry

Is your skin dry and dull? Have you tried slathering on moisturizers but nothing seems to be working? Read on below to find out what could be causing your skin to be dull and dry.

Here’s the thing: skincare can be a little complicated. Sometimes, it is not as easy as just applying on a heavy lotion after showering. There are several reasons that could be preventing you from getting that healthy glow that you’ve always wanted.

Here are some of the most common culprits of dry skin.

1. You could be over-cleansing.

Love showering and feeling clean? Don’t do it too often! According to skin experts, over-cleansing is one of the top reasons why skin gets dry.

Your skin has a natural barrier that keeps it healthy, balanced and protected. If you wash too much, you will be stripping off your natural oils, which results to dry skin.

This also goes the same for exfoliation. Doing it too much can hurt your skin! Ideally, two times

2. You are using harsh skin products.

Using products that are full of chemicals can strip the natural oils of your skin and mess with the PH balance too. When this happens, you will be more prone to sensitivity, irritation and even acne.

Make sure to read the label of the products you are buying. Unfortunately, many shampoos, body wash and soaps contain harmful ingredients. It is better to stick to organic bath and beauty products that are formulated to be gentle on skin. They can effectively clean but will not leave your skin feeling dry.

3. You are showering wrong.

Yes, you heard that right. Showering wrong can be causing your skin to lose its natural moisture too. According to skin experts, long, hot showers or baths can really dry your skin.

We know long, hot showers can be so relaxing! Doing them too much, however, can do you more harm than good. Stick to warm temperatures and try not to soak your skin too long.

4. You might have a skin or health condition.

Sometimes, it can be more than just wrong bath products and bad shower habits. You could also be suffering from a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis. Other medical-related reasons include hypothyroidism, diabetes and malnutrition. More serious health conditions like these usually also cause other symptoms like intense itching, crusting and inflamed patches.

If you are experiencing these other symptoms, it is always best to consult with your doctor. Understanding your skin’s health will be very helpful in determining the best skincare routine for you.

5. It’s genetic!

Here’s a reason that’s totally out of your hands — it could be genetic. Genes play a big role in your skin’s health and also on aging. Some people have naturally dry skin.

Don’t worry, there are so many things you can do to combat dry skin, even if genetics is the cause!

How To Moisturize Dry Skin

Dry skin may need a little more TLC but it is definitely not impossible to combat dryness. Here are a couple of simple tips to moisturize dry skin.

    • Drink plenty of water. Proper hydration will improve your skin’s moisture. Drink 6-8 glasses (or 1.2 - 1.5 liters) every day.
    • Invest in the right skincare products. Don’t settle with cheap bath products that may just damage your PH balance or cause irritation.
    • Apply moisturizer when skin is still damp to lock in the moisture.
    • Eat a healthy diet that’s high in antioxidants.
    • Don’t overexfoliate or overcleanse. This will strip off your skin of its natural oils.
    • Shave gently. If you shave too hard, you can scrape off the natural oil and protective layer of your skin. Always use a shaving cream or gel.
    • Protect your skin from sun damage. Wear sunscreen, especially when going out.
    • Make moisturizing part of your daily skincare routine.

No need to fret if you have dry and dull skin. There are a lot of things you can do to improve your skin’s health. Remember to be consistent!
